New Coffee shop to Open in Downtown Sterling

Tuesday, April 16, 2019

Today, Clive’s Staples Coffee Shop and Bakery held a soft-opening from 7 AM to 10 PM. The long-anticipated caffeine and literature inspired site (just South of Sterling Café) will officially open next Wednesday, April 24th.

For students and community members, Clive’s gives hope of a late study session and access to a shop open later than the typical 8 P.M. closure of many shops in town.

Brett Couture, the Resident Director of Campbell Hall and a former Sterling College student has long anticipated this coffee shop.

“The owners of Clive’s catered a coffee bar at my wedding in December, and they did an amazing job. It was exciting to see so many people supporting them on their opening day, even at 8:30 P.M.,” Couture said.

“Clive’s Staples” is a name derived from the author and poet, C.S. Lewis. Lewis was famous for his Christian apologetics, and his writing, which includes The Chronicles of Narnia, his Space Trilogy, and several works of Christian Literature.

The coffee shop and bakery will sell drinks inspired by characters from Lewis’ novels including lattes named “Snow Queen”, and “Dr. Ransom”.  It will also sell tea, hot chocolate, espresso, smoothies, Italian sodas, ice-cream shakes and a variety of baked goods and coffee.

Julianne Duree, a Junior at Sterling College commented on the atmosphere of the coffee shop.

“I felt if I stepped too close, it would pull me in and send me on an adventure with all my favorite characters. Just like the Turkish delights were a guilty pleasure for Edmund, I find Clive’s will be mine,” Duree said.

The coffee shop was renovated from the insides of the old Sterling Pharmacy. The décor matches several themes and items that appear in The Chronicles of Narnia, including a wardrobe, a painting of a ship, and lamppost wall decals.

Clive’s will host the English Blend’s Trivia Night on Tuesday, April 23, as well as the Release Party of Sterling College’s Great Plains Review on Thursday, May 2.

To RSVP for the English Blend’s Literary Trivia Night and reserve free cheesecake at the event, email with your team name and three members. The winning team will receive a prize pack which includes a Clive’s shirt and stickers, as well as other literary themed items.
