Men’s soccer wraps season

A 1-0 victory against Kansas Wesleyan University to end the regular season was the program’s first win over KWU since 2005.

“It’s just what the team is capable of doing,” junior Luis Iniguez said. “This is one of the best groups that this school has put together, and that’s all thanks to Coach Martinez.”

The team finished conference with a record of 7-5, earning a post-season rematch against Friends University. The game was close, but it ended in a 2-1 loss, said senior Mauricio Ayala, to end the season.

“We knew that we were playing against a great team,” freshman Gustavo Reyes said. “I think we were even. Though we suffered an unfortunate early goal, we stayed motivated even when we were down on the score. I’m very proud of this team because we never got scared of them.”

Senior Mauricio Cordone said he will miss everyday with the team and will remember how they could overcome adversity and fight any rival.

“I can’t say I have only one memory because I would be lying,” Cordone said. “It gave me thousands of moments. I learned a lot and met amazing people, so I take beautiful memories of my stay in Sterling.”

Senior Manuel Calderon-Roman said his favorite memories were from freshman year when they would gather at the coach’s house.

“I think I learned the most from that group,” Calderon-Roman said. “They pushed each other.” Reyes said he will miss everything from the team.

“This group is a family, and we enjoyed every moment together,” he said. “I’ll remember this season the rest of my life for everything we experienced during these almost three months, especially the win in our second game against the No. 14 [team] in the nation.”
